Chelsea stroll to victory and join Arsenal in Champions Leag

Emma Hayes squad players, who have been giving her earache in their desire to force their way into regular starting roles, shone in Albania

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes says the strength-in-depth within her squad means her players are giving her earache each week with their pleas to be part of the starting side, and while she may not necessarily mean that literally, the quality of the so-called squad players at her disposal was demonstrated loud and clear on Friday as they eased past Albanias Vllaznia with a 4-0 win to secure a place in the Womens Champions League quarter-finals.

In particular, two of Chelseas summer signings Serbia midfielder Jelena Cankovic, who provided two assists and Czech Republic midfielder Katerina Svitkova, who headed in the third goal made the most of their latest chance in Europe as they both continue to look increasingly at home in Hayes team, after settling-in periods.

Cankovic, who arrived from Rosengard on a three-year deal in August, enjoyed one of her best performances in a Chelsea shirt so far and Hayes said: She came into the club and picked up and injury pretty early on and then acquired another injury and it hasnt been until the last couple of weeks where shes been available to start from the start, because we wanted to get a bank of training minutes behind her, but she provides something different in terms of her ability to dictate play.

And also her final pass, I think, offers something different. And when you lose a player like Ji [So-yun], thats really hard to replicate, but Jele [Cankovic] has come into the team and I think shell just keep growing into the side. Shes got a massive goal threat too, and tonight I think is just the beginning for her.

Chelsea joined Arsenal in reaching the quarter-finals of this seasons competition, and in truth, ever since Hayes team beat Vllaznia 8-0 in London in Octobers reverse fixture, Fridays game was likely to be a question of how many? The outcome was never in doubt. The English side were dominant, as expected, on Friday with 18 corners to Vllaznias one, 10 shots on target to their hosts none and 70 per cent of the possession.

Youthful Vllaznia whose oldest player was 28 and the majority of whom were aged 21 or under offered virtually no attacking threat whatsoever but their defending was greatly improved from the reverse fixture. Nonetheless, they have not picked up any points in this group and, to no surprise, Wales Sophie Ingle placed in an early opener after Guro Reitens good work, and a quickly-taken set-piece allowed Fran Kirby to score Chelseas second, in a moment when Vllaznia didnt appear ready for the free-kick.

Chelsea were made to wait for their third and fourth goals but they eventually came late on through Svitkovas near-post header from Cankovics fine cross, before Maren Mjelde sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot in second-half stoppage time, as Chelsea claimed a 13th win from 15 away games this term.

Hayes praised former West Ham United star Svitkova for her worth ethic, adding: Its tough, I get more earaches on a weekly basis because of the depth and the squad size, weve got so many quality players. But credit to the entire dressing room they plug away, they train hard, and I dont mind them knocking on my door asking what they need to do to get in the team, as long as that application keeps happening.

And Katerina is someone who really puts it in on the training pitch. Shes so diligent, hard-working, and also patient, which you need to be for any new player coming into this team because we have so much quality.

Arsenal also mathematically secured their progression to the last eight from Group C on Thursday, despite losing 1-0 to defending champions Lyon, and it means Englands top flight will have two representatives in Februarys draw for Marchs quarter-finals.
